Sowing

  • cover soil with vermiculite to foil fungus gnats
  • water from below to reduce fungus gnats

Potting on

  • need larger cell inserts in trays for potting on
  • feed with seaweed

Sweet peas

  • sow in winter – root trainer, kept outside and kept watered
  • transplant when about 4″
  • remember to pinch out

Garlic / Onions

  • need regular watering

Cucumbers

  • direct sow – two seeds

Iceland poppies

  • direct sow in late autumn or early spring
  • deadhead

Sunflowers

  • direct sow
  • Bed 9 will be full of volunteers

Pumpkins

  • Sow outside at home

  • harden off carefully
  • pot on deeper

Runner beans

  • sow later
  • harden off at the top of the grow house, but make sure they get hardening off days outside too, so they don’t immediately burn (though they will recover)

Front bed renovation

  • dig over and gather bulbs
  • cut helianthus roots with spade
  • raise soil level with leaves / mulch
  • mulch callicarpa; add some sand
  • reassign some Bed 1 logs?
  • empty bed
  • full bed

  • fill back left corner better more bulbs? small gladioli?
