I planted the white everlasting pea at the back of Plum Corner, digging up some more couch grass roots and shifting bit more lemon balm. Now to work out something for the front of the bed.

I went round most of the beds, undoing the plastic to see what was beneath. Not many perennials – the horsetail only really appeared in Bed 1. There were some anaemic-looking self-sown sunflowers here and there, plus some acorns trying to grow. But other than that, it’s all fairly calm under there – but for the occasional huge ants’ nest and young slow worm.
